What is an advocate and how do I know if I need one?
An educational advocate partners with families to help them navigate the special education process. This could begin as young as age 2.5 when parents are considering the transition from EI to special education. The advocate may help review documents, participate in IEP/504 meetings and be an on-call resource for day to day questions that arise. There are many reasons why a parent may want to hire an advocate and many ways for an advocate to add value.
While an advocate is not an attorney they should be well educated in the laws and regulations impacting educational and civil rights. Your advocate should be able to refer you to an attorney should the need arise. Advocacy services are individualized and an initial consult is always free.
